Diabetes is bad!

And everybody knows it!  What's more, it's all too common.  But, did you know that there are simple, natural steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting diabetes, reduce the effects of already diagnosed diabetes, or even, in some cases, reverse the effects of diabetes?

Now, that doesn't mean the steps are easy.  They are lifestyle changes, and they might be hard to stick with, but they are simple changes that will make you healthier whether you have diabetes or not, but they have some extra benefits for those who do have diabetes.

Of course, if you have diabetes and you manage to reverse it's effects through any means, you'll be at high risk to get it again.  Thus, you should continue to maintain preventative measures, even if sugar no longer causes an immediate (or near immediate) adverse reaction.

A Proper Diet

A proper diet is easily the most important step in preventing, maintaining, or reversing the effects of diabetes. Eating foods with a low glycemic index (basically, not very much sugar) will help reduce blood sugar, help you lose weight, and help you feel healthier in general. This is sometimes seen as common sense, but it is 100% true. Furthermore, heavily processed foods often lack minor nutrients that keep your whole body balanced, even if they have been "enriched". Avoiding such foods for more natural foods can help you feel better all the time, as well as help with diabetes problems.

If you would like specifics, you should speak with a qualified nutritionist who can actually build a diet plan with you.

Supplements of the Nutritional Variety

For the nutrients that you just can't seem to get in a particular diet, there are supplements that you can take.  Certain supplements and vitamins can help fight diabetes and lower blood sugar, and even help you feel better in general.  Usually, it's better to get these nutrients in the diet itself, but if you can't, supplements are a viable alternative.

As with a proper diet, you should consult a qualified nutritionist before choosing supplements to your diet.

And Exercise

Too many people neglect exercise because they feel they don't have the time or they underestimate the effects in can have.  Exercise is necessary for living a healthy life with or without diabetes, but exercise also helps keep blood sugar low whether you have diabetes or not.  Furthermore, you can allow yourself to have a few extra carbohydrates if you are active enough to compensate for it without compromising your health, which is certainly a plus.

This is only an overview!

Keep in mind that this is only an overview of what can be done to help fight or even occasionally reverse the effects of diabetes. Also, always trust the word of a qualified nutritionist over anything you read online, no matter how reputable the source is.

I am glad to read your hub. My father is a brittle diabetic. It is a challenging condition to say the least. Prevention is really the answer. Watch your diet and exercise regularly.
